#MTM004 : ZOE AND BRUNO

Tell us a bit about yourself + your business

I think I have always had a love for beads. My mum once took my brother and I into a little indie craft store. We selected a few beads from the old man’s tray of colours and story told. I knew from a very young age, I loved beads and all things colourful!

I am self employed, although I do work part-time at a grocery store. However, most of the time I am working solo on my Etsy shop selling Premium Czech glass beads.  I love searching for unique and affordable Czech glass beads, which aren't always available here in Australia.

I love to take photos of my beads as if they were picked from nature. I don't want people to feel like I'm your average bead store. I want my customers to be inspired by my photos which may reflect in their own creative process.

What tools do you use in your biz to keep you organised and on top of your tasks?

I would be lost without my daily diary, and Excel. Although I found Excel hard to use at first, I use it a lot when it comes to organising my inventory.

What is the best thing you have done for you and your business this year?

I invested a few lessons with my accountant to learn the ins and outs of Quick Books online.

It was stressful, but I can now see my businesses progress and how my income compares to my expenses.

Have you had a truly memorable customer experience that inspires you to keep doing what your doing?

I remember a few years ago, I had a customer contact me, telling me she was in remission and that buying my beads and making jewellery were keeping her in high spirits.

Receiving that message was certainly uplifting and eyeopening.

Tell us about your most favourite or popular product that you have listed recently?

I think with beads, like fashion, it changes from season to season, oddly enough.

Flowers always seem to popular or organic, natural looking beads.

Beads that look a part of nature, because I guess nature is what inspires us the most.

What's coming up that we can look forward to seeing from your biz?

I have a massive amount of Czech glass beads to list. I will hopefully be having a product update in late March and again in April. If all goes to plan.

Name a creative artist you are admiring?

I am a big fan of Bok Bok B'Gerk. Wooden, laser cut jewellery (Handmade in Ballarat, Australia), which each piece is intricately painted by hand.

What inspired you to start your business?

My grandparents. While they are retired now, they had multiple business as I was growing up

What is your fav quote?

'Life is too short to wake up with regrets. So love the people who treat you right, forget about those who don't. Believe everything happens for a reason. If you get the chance, take it. If it changes your life, let it. Nobody said life would be easy. They just promised that it would most likely be worth it.'

What is the number one thing that you love about running your own creative business?

The satisfaction or running my own business. That I have created something of my own. .

What is your morning process?

I will admit, I am not a morning person, but I do like to plan my day ahead and around the hours I work at the grocery store. I am a bit 'to do' list person.

Where are you the most and least organised in your business?

I always try and stay on-top of my book work. I seemed to be least organised when it comes to listing new beads. I have new bead supply's everywhere at the moment and I need to organise a time schedule around my 'to do' list.

How do you handle moments of self doubt?:

I don't ha-ha! My partner is always there when I am ready to throw in the towel.

He always seems to know exactly what to say, when I am questioning myself.

I also turn to him for advice with some hard business decisions.

What is the best advice you have received that has helped you in your business?

If you love what you do, then work hard and never give up!
