#MTM009 : EPHERIELL

Meet Jess + Nick from Epheriell.  Based in the Sunshine Coast Australia and approaching 10 years in business after starting out as a hobby, Epheriell is going strong in the world of modern handmade eco jewellery.

Tell us a bit about yourself + your business

I began Epheriell as a hobby business in 2008 to sell some of the copious piles of jewellery I had created for fun. After a few months, I took a silversmithing course, and fell in love with the metal.

A few years into the business, after taking it full-time, I brought my husband Nick on board, and he now makes the bulk of our jewellery. Today, we specialise in Sterling silver wedding rings, and sell all over the world.

Tell us about your morning process?

We start out mornings with cups of tea in bed, and a bit of reading. Then, I usually do some sort of exercise (walking, elliptical, or yoga) before having a shower and settling in to work around 10ish. I usually start by catching up on emails from overnight, before moving on to the tasks scheduled for the day.

What tools do you use in your biz to keep you organised and on top of your tasks?

Whew, so many! My main ones are trello, the Cal app on my phone, a whole-year wall planner and a weekly desk planner.

What is the best thing you have done for you and your business this year?

Well, we moved into a new home and studio in the last year, and that has been brilliant. We used to live and work in 2 rooms... now we have our own offices, and a separate jewellery studio. It makes it much easier to 'close the door' on the day's work.

Have you had a truly memorable customer experience that inspires you to keep doing what your doing?

So many! We've had so many photos and lovely stories from our customers about how we contributed to their wedding day - which never fails to absolutely delight us.

What's coming up that we can look forward to seeing from your biz?

Well, we're currently doing a re-design of our website, which we are very excited about!

Tell us about your most favourite or popular product/service that you have created recently?

Our best-seller is our 5mm oxidised Sterling silver wedding ring. I didn't know it, but the day I made that ring, I created the 'thing' that has seen our business go from strength to strength.

Name a creative artist you are admiring?

Kirsten Devitt of Each to Own and Cath Young of My Bearded Pigeon - fabulous, feisty, and super-creative fellow Aussies whom I deeply admire.

What inspired you to start your business?

I had long dreamt of creating a viable online business. When I started making jewellery as a hobby, I never intended to turn it into the business I'd dreamt of, but here we are!

What is the number one thing that you love about running your own creative business?

Freedom. The freedom to choose the direction of our business, the freedom to choose what to do every day, and the freedom to design our lives as we see fit.

Where are you the most and least organised in your business?

Our everyday work flow is mostly systematised now, so that all just takes care of itself. Positive habits are powerful! I'm not so good at making time for new designs, mostly because we make timeless designs and most of our sales are wedding rings - so we don't have many return customers that need luring with new exciting designs.

What is the best advice you have received that has helped you in your business?

Something I read from Marie Forleo - everything is figureoutable.

How do you handle moments of self doubt?

I draw on past successes to remind myself that I can do it. And then I will probably go for a walk, that always helps me feel better!

What is your fav quote?

"It's a marathon, not a sprint." In other words, if you want to have a successful business, be in it for the long haul, and be patient.
